Take Our Daughters & Sons To Work

My daughters love to come to work with me, they enjoy the environment and helping out. They have come with me at times when I am called in to work on issues and they will stay in my office and read or write. They like to see where I work and who I work with and I love to share this part of my life with them.

I remember as a child going to work with my Dad, my Dad worked in the family business his Dad (my Grandfather) started. It was nice going to work and being part of what my family did, I learned a lot during that time and experience so many different aspects of work. I had to load stock, do labor work and as I grew I also learned to help with book keeping and sales.

I am a computer programmer, I develop software solutions and manage a staff of developers. I worked hard to get where I am and continue to work hard every day to take care of my family and help their dreams come true.

My girls ask about this day all year long and know that they can’t miss a lot of school if they want to participate in this event. I will take the girls for the first half of the day and they will bring some devices, a book and some school work to keep them occupied at times. I will have them help me organize paper work and they love to “deliver” things to others in the office.

Designed to be more than a career day, the Take Our Daughters And Sons To Work® program goes beyond the average “shadow” an adult. Exposing girls and boys to what a parent or mentor in their lives does during the work day is important, but showing them the value of their education, helping them discover the power and possibilities associated with a balanced work and family life, and providing them an opportunity to share how they envision the future and begin steps toward their end goals in a hands-on and interactive environment is key to their achieving success. Each year, we develop new interactive activities and partnerships that will assist us in taking girls and boys to the future they dream of.

2012 Goals

I have a few goals that I want to achieve this year. I guess they are resolutions also, but goals I usually strive to fulfill. I have 2 main goals for 2012 that I am writing abouting this post and will post updates throughout the year.

Healthy Lifestyle
I tried this last year and did good for a few months. This year I hope to take this further and achieve my goal weight of 175lb (currently at 213lb) and maintian this weight throughout the year. I will be taking this slow to increase the odds of achieving and maintaining my goal weight.

As I have mentioned in a previous post I have joined the Healthy Every Week Challenge. I also will be using my Fitbit to monitor the amount of activity that I do dailey, I will be setting a goal for that later in the week. I will also be working with kettlebells.

Budget
This year we want to tighten our budget, with the condition of the economy we want to save more to be beter prepared. We have joined Project: Food Budget and will be posting weekly updates and hopefully find ways of lowering our food budget and learning some new meals.

Kids Education

Our children do well in school, but lately have been slipping a little and some classes are a little more challenging. We are looking at new schedules and techniques to help our kids keep our grades up. They both love reading and we want to keep it that way and also help them increase their comprehension.

Join us on this journey and we look forward to hearing other peoples ideas.

Join Us for a Healthy January Challenge | Healthy Eats – Food Network Healthy Living Blog.

I am trying to live a more healthy lifestyle and help my family with the same goal. My girls like to follow my example and I need to make some changes, so this looks like a perfect way to start.

What is it?

The January Healthy Every Week Challenge is a month of healthy eating, broken down into weekly goals:

Week 1: Eat Breakfast

Week 2: Eat More Whole Grains

 Week 3: Cook at Home

Week 4: Eat More Fruits and Vegetables

Week 5: Stay On Track

I will be posting my progress each week and hopefully stay on track with this challenge. Click on the link above to join the challenge and let me know so we can help each other.

Blogging verse Private Journal

This blog is public and as such I censor the content that I put online, I also like to journal and do that offline. I have read of people keeping their journals online but set to private and have and still am considering it. I think one of the reasons is that I really like the blogging app I use Blogsy and another is that the the journal is on the cloud and available to me anywhere I can access the net.

But, even if I setup the blog as private there is also a chance it can be access. Which makes me think who would want to hack my journal, reading my private entries is actuall pretty boring and is more for me as a theraputic act and hopefully for my kids later in life.

Right now I don’t know what I will do, I am writing more about loss, the loss of close family members we have and till are dealing with this year. This year turned into a very difficult year for my family as we grieve the loss of close relatives.
